We all see movie stars in the media with their wonderful, beautiful smiles. But what makes those smiles so great? Well, let’s take a look at some of the factors.
Top 6 factors found in a beautiful smile
- 1/ The horizontal plane of the upper incisor teeth should be roughly parallel to the line joining the pupils (interpupillary line). If they are not, canting of the plane of teeth is observable and the overall appearance is poor.
- 2/ The incisor teeth are unworn. This is associated with youth. Worn teeth that make the plane of the front teeth look horizontal is associated with an aged appearance.
- 3/ The plane created by the tips or edges of the upper teeth are convex and follow the line of the lower lip when smiling.
- 4/ The tips of the central incisors are the same length as the tips of the canine teeth so that the second incisors (lateral incisors beside the larger centre incisors) are slightly higher than the tips of the central incisors and canines. This is known as a ‘gull wing’ appearance.
- 5/ Vertical, non-oblique centre line between the incisors with centre line as close as possible to the centre of the face.
- 6/ The proportions of the central incisors, in particular should be correct. Generally, the width of the central incisor should be 70-80% it’s length. Short, wide central incisors or long, narrow central incisors look displeasing.
